Understanding Language-Based Dyslexia
Language-based dyslexia typically results from a deficit in the phonological component of language, as well as deficits in rapid recall of common information and weaknesses in cognitive processing speed.
THE IMPACT?
When these language areas are discrepant, in relation to other areas of higher skills, dyslexia may manifest as:
Reading: Appears as choppy reading or guessing words by shape rather than sounding them out. This can impact reading comprehension if many words are read incorrectly.
Writing: Spelling may be incorrect, with letters in the wrong order, or overall poor spelling skills. Writing can be messy due to struggles with punctuation, capitalization, letter formation, and spacing.
Math: Difficulties with rapid recall of basic math facts and correct sequencing for multi-step problems. This doesn't mean a complete inability to do math but shows varied strengths and weaknesses in different areas.
According to the International Dyslexia Association and the National Institutes of Health and Child Development, dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and poor spelling and decoding abilities. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience, which can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
WHAT TYPE OF EVALUATION?
A Complex Language Evaluation at True Potential is recommended to determine if individuals between 5 to 13 years have language-based dyslexia and/or other language disorders (expressive/receptive language). This evaluation may be covered by insurance depending on your insurance plan and benefits.
Language-Based Dyslexia Evaluation at True Potential is recommended to determine if individuals between 14 years of age -adult have language based dyslexia and/or other language disorders (expressive/receptive language). For this evaluation, portions of the testing may be covered by insurance depending on your insurance plan and benefits. A portion of this evaluation will be an out of pocket expense.
HOW WE CAN HELP
Dyslexia Remediation at TPE
Our dyslexia remediation is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, using the Wilson Language Program. This evidence-based methodology teaches reading, spelling, and writing with clear, straightforward instructions on the sounds each letter makes and how those letters combine in printed text.
Session Focus Areas
Decoding
Reading fluency
Reading comprehension
Spelling (encoding)
Writing mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, letter formations)
Each concept is taught using 10 different modes per lesson, engaging various brain processes: sight, visual memory, sound, touch, speaking, and writing. This interactive approach is tailored for dyslexic processors.
Dyslexia Interventionists
At TPE, interventionists lead the remediation sessions. They have specialized training in the Wilson Language Program and are overseen by a certified Wilson therapist. We pride ourselves on strictly upholding our remediation services to teach diagnostically and with fidelity.
Session Options
Families can choose between in-person or virtual sessions.
