Advocacy

When it comes to navigating the special education process or requesting a 504 plan, going at it alone is not so fun. It is difficult to know what to expect, what to prepare, and what to say. TPE staff can help you understand and prepare for the process, as well as be a third party voice to validate your concerns.

Our services can include, but are not limited to:

  • Special Education (IEP) Process Consultation

  • 504 Plan Process Consultation

  • Meeting and Document Preparation

  • Preparation of Suggested List of Accommodations

  • IEP and 504 Review

Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology solutions can be found everywhere, but how many apps or software programs have you tried and then discarded? Come test drive several technology solutions that offer ease of use and big results, before you make a financial commitment.

The team at True Potential Education can talk to you about a wide range of technology options, designed to address a wide variety of educational needs. There are too many software options out there for you to look through and review. We have done a lot of that work for you and can train you on practical applications. Finding the most appropriate AT solution will alleviate frustration for everyone (students, parents and educators) and boost student productivity incrementally.

Some of the most common AT solutions we utilize include:

Student Services

English Grammar

True Potential Education utilizes a fun, multi-sensory grammar program that has been specifically designed for maximum retention and less need to rely on traditional approaches such as the memorization of ‘boring’ rules. Students will have an opportunity to creatively see, hear, speak and move components during each lesson as they begin to master the structure of language.

Enriched Text

Build a Bridge Between Tutoring and Real Life Reading

The enriched text program is the next step to build increased confidence in reading. Once a student has reached the upper levels of the Wilson Reading System, it is time to take those skills from controlled text and apply them to every day reading. Students are welcome to bring their own reading material (homework or pleasure) if they choose.

Best fit: Book 9 and up

Comprehension Skills

Stairsteps to Understanding Written and Oral Text

Fast or accurate reading does not always mean effective reading. Reading comprehension is more than retelling a story, it is about understanding the implicit and explicit meaning of text. By following a structured curriculum, students systematically learn strategies to pull the meaning from written and/or audio text including themes, inferences, figurative language and more.

Best fit: 4th grade and up

Language Expansion

Sight Words

Sight words are commonly used words (was, where, would, etc.) that many times cannot be decoded at all, or not until the very upper level Wilson books. These words are important because even beginning readers will find them on almost any page of text. Sight word sessions use a variety of explicit, multi-sensory strategies to master reading and writing these words.

Best fit: All ages

Vocabulary

Students with dyslexia commonly struggle with vocabulary. Multi-sensory vocabulary instruction allows students to connect meaning to grade level words in a way that memorization of a definition does not.

Best fit: All ages

Sign Language

American Sign Language (ASL) is a wonderful alternative to learning a traditional foreign language, and for a visual spatial learner, it can be  incrementally easier to master. True Potential Education offers a full variety of ASL classes depending on what the learner's goals are. Classes are offered individually, in a group of two, or virtually.

Word Recall

The word recall program is a component of our expressive and receptive speech therapy at True Potential Education. We focus on addressing the error pattern that is specific to each individual and provide word retrieval strategy instruction, as well as word-finding self-advocacy and word-finding accommodations that can be used in the classroom or during social activities.

Does your child:

  • Know the word he/she wants to say, but cannot think of it?

  • Have difficulty remembering the names of people, places or objects that he/she knows?

  • Substitute

    • a real word for a nonsense word that sounds like the real word he/she can't remember (such as, says "custard" for mustard; "geophy" for geography)

    • the function of the word he/she can't remember (such as, says "cutting" for scissors)

    • a description word for the word he/she can't remember (such as, says "the brown one" for penny)

    • vague words for words he/she can't remember (such as, says "stuff, you know, watch-a-ma-call-it")?

Writing Development

How to Navigate a Writing Assignment

The ability to express ourselves with text is a vital skill, as it is relied upon in all academic areas, across all grade levels. It is much more complex than most of us realize, because it involves all of the components of language: abstract reasoning, critical thinking, organization, familiarity with text structure, working knowledge of grammar, and sentence structure.

When the structure of language is taught in the classroom, many of our students are still focusing all of their energy on reading and spelling. Once remediation begins and these skills improve, many students find they are lacking grammatical and organizational writing skills that were mastered by their peers early on. Students/parents may choose to schedule sessions with an emphasis on grammar, essay writing, or both.

Here’s what to look for:

AdobeStock_262232330.jpeg
  • Writing struggles inhibiting achievement

  • Written ideas jump around or are disconnected

  • Student writes as little as possible regardless of knowledge

  • Student has difficulty applying OG spelling concepts out in the “real world”

  • Student does not know how to research a topic and create a written paper, or cannot “get started” with these tasks

Our Approach to Writing

True Potential Education uses explicit and systematic instruction to teach writing development skills; just like we teach reading! The tasks will be broken down into pre-writing, writing, editing, and then embellishment and detail. "The process may feel similar in many classrooms however, our individual and small group formats uniquely pace the progress of each student. Students will be able to confidently complete each step of the writing process before introduction of the next skill.
