Orton-Gillingham Methodology

At True Potential Education, we only use the tests and programs that have been studied and approved by the 34 National Institutes of Health universities to both identify and remediate dyslexia. We use standardized tests to uncover gaps in core language skills. These are the skills needed to read, write and spell.

Quality Remediation

Orton-Gillingham is a methodology that was developed by Dr. Sam Orton, a neuropsychologist who studied and named dyslexia, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and linguist. OG programs are built on the systematic, multi-sensory teaching of the sounds that make up our language. When the sound system of a language is mastered, those sounds can then be logically related to the printed letters that represent these sounds.

​In recent years, the impact of OG intervention on the brain has been studied extensively using fMRIs. In these studies, fMRI images were taken before and after OG remediation was administered. Prior to treatment, it was substantiated that dyslexic readers were only using one active center in their brain to read rather than the three centers used by a typical reader. However, after three years of OG therapy, fMRI images showed that the dyslexic readers had developed new neural pathways and were using the three reading centers used by the typical reader. In other words, the brain literally built the pathways it needed to access the areas of the brain that help us be quick, efficient and accurate readers.

​There are no jumping jacks, balance techniques, magic one-week fixes, or flashing lamps that "cure" dyslexia. Core instruction that ensures a student's mastery of sound-to-symbol awareness, phonemic awareness and understanding of morphology is how dyslexia is remediated. It takes time and hard work, but when done with fidelity, it produces results.

The OG Session at TPE

Each session at True Potential Education includes approximately 55 minutes of instructional time, and each concept is taught 10 consistent ways using sight, visual memory, sound, touch, speaking, and writing within that lesson. At TPE we pride ourselves on strictly upholding our services to teach diagnostically, and with fidelity. 

TPE families have a choice between individual sessions or our intensive small group specialty program(s). Sessions are taught in-person or online.
